Going grocery shopping can be a Love/Hate relationship. I personally love to go grocery shopping because I like to have my cabinets and fridge full. I hate going grocery shopping cause you can spend a ton of money each time you go.
Here are a couple of ways you can save some money next time you go grocery shopping
When heading out to go grocery shopping look through the fridge, cabinets and pantry. You want to write down what you are low on and what has finished. After going food shopping for your family, you should have an idea of the more routine items you pick up. If you are not sure you can keep an inventory list and keep it in somewhere in the kitchen.
Plan A Menu!
A great way to save money is to plan a weekly menu that consist of breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and snacks for the whole family. This way everyone knows what they will be having ahead of time. You can do this as a family to get everyone’s input.
After your menu is created for that week you can go to your inventory sheet and see what you have or don’t have. This will save you a lot of time and money at the store.
I can’t tell you how many times I went to the store, spent $150 and had to return during the week to grab items for dinner that we decided we wanted that day
Look for Sales!
Before heading out to your local grocery store, check out all the flyers of stores that are around you. They love to compete with each other so you may have to go to a couple of stores to get the best deals.
I love to get my fruits from a little fruit stand because they are always very affordable. I love to get my cleaning and household products (if I don’t make them at home) from CVS, Walgreens or Target.
Using coupons can save you tons of money!! Now a days you have so many options. I have coupons on my mobile device, I get them from the Sunday paper and you also have coupons from individual stores. Sign up for their loyalty cards too.
You can use apps on your phone like Ibotta They will pay you money into your Paypal account for buying items you already use. If you buy an item on their list (switches constantly) just submit a copy of the receipt with your phone and they will credit your account with whatever the amount they offer. I personally love this app and have received money into my Paypal already.
Learn your store!
Every grocery store puts items on sale every so often. These are not one time deals so pay attention to the sale and if its a good one then stock up until the next sale comes along again. My store puts the same items on sale every 3-4 weeks. So if Its a great deal then I will stock up for 3-4 weeks. This way if I want or need that item after the sale is over I don’t have to pay full price for it.
Talk to customer service or a manager and ask them about their policies. They may accept competitors coupons but don’t advertise it. My Publix accepts Winn-Dixie coupons
If your store has their own store coupons you can add those with manufacturer coupons for a better savings! Don’t forget those rain checks
Never shop when your hungry!
I cannot tell you how many times I went into the grocery store hungry…smh! It’s NEVER a good idea people Trust me!! You will purchase items on impulse. Impulse purchases usually consist on 20-30% of your bill.
Go when you have already eaten and try to go early in the morning when the kids are in school. Taking the kids with you can raise that grocery bill up! I don’t have to explain why this is a good idea cause I’m sure we all experienced a shopping trip with kids before
If you have a grocery budget that you are trying to stick to, I recommend using cash to pay for your purchases. Once the money is gone its time to go home. If you use a debit or credit card and you go over with impulse purchases you will most likely say its OK. If your using cash you will most likely stay on budget and think twice about getting items you want rather than need.
You can always add the priority items to the front of the line to be scanned first then add the items you want to the end. When you have reached your limit then you know the rest has to go back.
Hope these ideas help you save some money on your next shopping trip!
